Congestion control for video, multicast, wireless and fairness

TCP flow control is empirical, sender-based, point-to-point and bursty, and assumes that packet losses mean congestion, which makes it unsuitable in many contexts. In wireless networks, packet losses are often due to transmission errors and/or handovers. Multimedia applications prefer a more stable rate. For multicast applications a receiver-based flow control is better adapted to the heterogeneity of (possibly distrusted) receivers. In all cases, some fairness towards TCP is required to avoid an Internet collapse. And last but not least, there is a need for a sound mathematical basis to congestion control, such as optimization flow control or control theory.

Research performed in RUN

I. El Khayat has proposed the CIFL (Coding-Independent Fair Layered multicast) protocol. CIFL is a receiver-driven multicast congestion control protocol, which is fair towards TCP and stable in steady-state. Besides, it is not specific a particular coding scheme, in the sense that it can work as well with an exponentially distributed set of hierarchical layers, or with layers of equal throughputs, or any other scheme. Stability is achieved through automatic learning after unsuccessful joins. More recent work shows that this learning scheme can also be directly integrated in TCP in a backward compatible way, making TCP much less bursty, while remaining TCP friendly

In a more general framework, the source can also adapt by selecting the number of hierarchical layers and their rates to better match the receiver capacities. N. Bonmariage has formulated the layer rate adaptation as an optimization problem, encompassing all important aspects of layered video transmission, i.e. congestion control, scalability, fairness and layer rates adaptation.
