Description

Network and distributed systems management covers all the precautions and activities needed to ensure the effective and efficient use of a computer network or a distributed system. Management technologies have been driven by both the corporate network environment and the telecommunications industry. Network and system management frameworks like Internet SNMP and OSI management mainly focussed on satisfying corporate network management needs. The ITU-T's TMN extends OSI management to provide generic management for all components of a telecommunication network. The logical layered architecture of TMN provides a structuring into business management, service management, network management, network element management and element.

Following the deregulation of the telecommunication industry, the operators compete to rapidly introduce new sophisticated services such as virtual private network, mobile and multimedia services. Consequently, flexible access and management at the service level are required. The fomer TINA-C initiative aimed at defining a consistent architecture addressing the needs of traditional and new services, including management type services. The TINA architecture integrates TMN with IN, distributed computing and object-oriented analysis and design.

Current research work of RUN addresses Traffic Engineering and Measurement. In particular RUN has been involved in the TOTEM project, where an open access toolbox of traffic engineering has been developed.

Past research work of RUN focused on the management aspects of group communication at the service level. We have considered concepts from the service management layer of TMN and from the service architecture of TINA. The goal was to derive generic group management functionality to enable reuse of service components. Typical applications to be supported are multimedia conferencing and multimedia messaging. Typical functions to be provided are group administration, session invitation and joining, and voting.
